And to be fair, Excel is not a bad tool. It has helped thousands of QA teams start their testing process in a structured way. The problem starts when the product, team, and testing responsibility become bigger than the spreadsheet. A simple sheet that worked well for fifty test cases starts becoming difficult when the team has five hundred, five thousand, or fifty thousand test cases. Multiple versions of the same file start floating around. Some people update the latest version, while others unknowingly work on an older version. Test cases get duplicated. Old test cases remain in the sheet even when the feature has changed. New test cases are added without proper structure. Reporting becomes manual. Execution history becomes difficult to maintain. Traceability becomes weak. And slowly, the team starts losing confidence in its own testing documentation.
This is where Excel starts showing its real limitation. Excel can store test cases, but it cannot truly manage the lifecycle of testing. It cannot give the right visibility into test execution without manual effort. It cannot easily show which areas are covered, which are risky, which test cases are outdated, which modules are failing repeatedly, and which releases had the highest defect trends. It cannot properly connect product knowledge, historical defects, test execution, and reporting in one structured system. The result is that test cases become static rows in a sheet instead of living quality assets that help the organization make better product decisions.
When companies finally decide that Excel is not enough, they usually face another challenge. Most test case management tools in the market are either expensive, complicated, or loaded with features that many teams do not need in the beginning. Many tools are built for large enterprises, with complex workflows, deep configurations, multiple permission layers, integrations, dashboards, automation connections, and process-heavy structures. These are useful for some mature organizations, but for many QA teams, especially growing companies, startups, service companies, and mid-sized teams, this becomes too much too soon.

Between these two extremes, many QA teams simply need a practical, simple, reliable, and open test case management system that they can use without fear. This gap is one of the biggest reasons we created Tesbo Test Manager.
Tesbo Test Manager started with a very simple thought: test case management should be accessible to every QA team. A team should not be forced to choose between messy Excel sheets and expensive enterprise tools. A company should not avoid structured QA just because the available tools feel too heavy or costly. A QA engineer should not spend more time managing scattered files than actually thinking about quality. A testing team should have one place where test cases can be written, reviewed, organized, executed, and reported in a clean and simple way.
At QAble, Our goal was not to build another complicated test management product. The goal was to build a foundation. We wanted Tesbo Test Manager to solve the core problem first. The core problem is not fancy dashboards. The core problem is not having ten different integrations. The core problem is that many teams do not have a clean, centralized, and reliable place to manage their test cases and testing knowledge. Without that foundation, every other improvement becomes weak.
The more we worked with QA teams and organizations, the more we realized that test case management is not only about test cases. It is also about product knowledge. Every good test case carries some form of product understanding. It tells us how the product should behave, what business rule should be validated, what user journey should work, what edge case should not be missed, and what risk the team is trying to control. Over time, these test cases become a knowledge base of the product. They explain the product from a quality perspective.
This becomes even more important in today’s AI-driven world. QA engineers are already using tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI systems to generate test cases, write scenarios, identify edge cases, and improve coverage. This is a positive shift. AI can help QA engineers work faster. It can help them think through possibilities. It can reduce repetitive documentation effort. It can act as a thinking partner. But AI also brings a new problem: without proper context, AI-generated test cases can become generic.
A general AI tool does not automatically understand your product. It does not know your business rules. It does not know your customer workflows. It does not know your historical bugs. It does not know which features are fragile, which modules often break, which flows are revenue-critical, which compliance rules matter, or which customer journeys are most important. If a QA engineer simply copies a requirement into a chat window and asks AI to generate test cases, the output may look good on the surface, but it may still miss important product-specific scenarios.
This is why we believe the future of test case management is not just storing test cases. The future is centralized quality knowledge. AI will become more useful for QA only when it has access to the right context. That context must come from requirements, product flows, existing test cases, past execution results, defect history, business rules, release notes, risk areas, and domain knowledge. If all of this knowledge remains scattered across Excel sheets, documents, chats, and individual minds, AI cannot become truly effective for the QA team.

That is not a sustainable way to build quality intelligence.
The reason we made Tesbo Test Manager open source is also deeply connected to this belief. Testing data is sensitive. A company’s test cases often reveal how its product works internally. They may include workflows, business logic, validation rules, customer journeys, permissions, edge cases, compliance scenarios, and risk areas. For many organizations, this information should not casually sit inside a third-party system without control. Data privacy is not just an IT concern. In quality engineering, test data and test knowledge are also strategic assets.
By making Tesbo Test Manager open source, we want organizations to adopt test case management without worrying too much about data ownership and privacy. They can self-host it. They can run it on their own infrastructure. They can keep the data inside their own environment. They can review the code. They can customize the system if required. They can integrate it into their internal process. Most importantly, they can use it without feeling locked into a vendor.
Open source gives freedom. It gives transparency. It gives control. It allows teams to start small and grow at their own pace. A startup can use it without worrying about early tool costs. A services company can use it across multiple client projects. An enterprise team can self-host it for privacy. A QA community can contribute to it. Engineers can inspect it, improve it, extend it, and adapt it. This is the kind of openness we believe the QA ecosystem needs.

It is being built for real QA teams who want practical tools, not bloated systems. We are not trying to replace every enterprise platform overnight. We are trying to give teams a strong, accessible, and privacy-friendly alternative to begin with. We want to help teams move from scattered Excel files to structured quality management. Tesbo Test Manager is still evolving. We are actively adding new features, improving workflows, and making the product more agentic. Our direction is clear.
