The system was in production.
It worked.
And it was built without version control, using Perl scripts, ad-hoc PHP files, PostgreSQL stored procedures, and JasperReports.
From a modern engineering perspective, it looked like a disaster.
And yet — it had been running for years.
Even more surprising: the main developer was also one of the CEOs.
One day, he asked for my opinion about the architecture.
So I prepared carefully.
I spent a weekend documenting everything:
- maintainability issues
- lack of structure
- scaling risks
- missing engineering practices
On Monday, I presented it.
He listened quietly.
By the end of the day, I was told my role was no longer needed.
That was my last day there.
At first, I thought I made a communication mistake
Maybe I was too direct.
Maybe I didn’t frame things correctly.
Maybe I underestimated how personal the system was.
But over time, I realized something deeper:
It wasn’t just about communication.
It was about feedback itself — and what we do when it challenges something we built.
We don’t reject feedback. We reject discomfort.
Most people say they want feedback.
What they actually want is confirmation.
Not signals that force them to rethink decisions already made.
That pattern doesn’t just exist in companies.
It exists in products too.
The same failure pattern repeats everywhere
I later read a story about a developer who spent months building a well-designed product.
Technically solid.
Carefully built.
But nobody cared.
It failed not because it was bad.
But because the market never wanted it in the first place.
In the AI era, building is no longer the hard part
We are entering a world where:
MVPs take days, not months
prototypes are generated in hours
full apps can be scaffolded by AI tools
So the bottleneck is shifting.
Building software is becoming cheap. Validation is not.
And that changes everything.
Because if anyone can build something, then building is no longer the advantage.
Choosing what not to build becomes the real skill.
The uncomfortable truth
Most developers still follow this loop:
- Build something interesting
- Polish it
- Launch it
- Hope users care
But users don’t reward effort.
They reward relevance.
And relevance can’t be guessed — it has to be validated.
The real question is earlier than “can I build this?”
It is:
- Does anyone actually want this?
- What evidence do I have?
- What signal confirms this problem exists?
- Am I willing to change direction if I’m wrong?
Because the hardest part isn’t building.
It’s discarding an idea you already invested in.
That experience changed how I think about building
That old job and that feedback conversation taught me the same lesson I keep seeing in product work:
Feedback is easy to ask for.
Hard to accept.
And expensive to ignore.

The idea is simple:
Instead of guessing ideas, you look at real demand.
Real frustrations.
Real problems people are actively trying to solve.
Because the best ideas usually don’t start as ideas.
They start as repeated pain.
Final thought
In a world where building software is becoming trivial,
the real skill is not execution.
It’s validation.
And the hardest part is still the same:
Being willing to change your mind when reality disagrees with your idea.
