Polygon mints about 52.5M POL every 90 days under its 2% annual emission, and burns roughly 35M POL over the same window through EIP-1559 fees on Polygon PoS. Framework reading: +0.16% net — essentially flat. The aggregator monitor reads +0.47%; the small gap is treasury accrual sitting in custody.
The verdict, in one paragraph
For the 90-day window ending June 10 2026, the framework reads POL at +0.16% net inflation — protocol emission almost fully offset by gas-fee burn on Polygon PoS. The aggregator monitor reads +0.47%, a 0.31-percentage-point gap inside the framework's 0.5-point tolerance. The two readings agree. POL in June 2026 is one of the most neutrally-positioned Layer-1 tokens in coverage: meaningful emission, meaningful burn, the two roughly cancel.
Sell pressure: where new POL comes from
POL has one source of new supply: the 2% annual emission set by the EmissionManager contract on Ethereum mainnet, split 1% to validator staking rewards and 1% to the Community Treasury. On a base of ~10.66B POL circulating, the full 2% annual mint translates to roughly 52.5M POL every 90 days. The validator side flows continuously to PoS validators as part of their reward stream; the Community Treasury side accrues to a governance-controlled contract and is deployed via monthly grant rounds run by the independent Community Treasury Board.
The full 52.5M sits in Sell #1 of the framework's ledger as the emission baseline. The framework treats Community Treasury accrual as still-in-treasury at this read — the 1% does accrue mechanically, but whether it lands in market depends on the Treasury Board's grant deployment cadence, which is opaque per-grant. The 1B over 10 years committed by the Treasury Board is the ceiling; the actual quarterly outflow can run faster or slower.
Sell #2 (vesting unlocks) is zero — the original MATIC team / backer / advisor cliffs all completed by 2023, and aggregator data confirms POL is "fully unlocked" on the cohort side. Sell #3 (discretionary deploys) sits at zero in this read for the reason above. Sell #4 (bankruptcy estate) is zero.
Buy pressure: where the POL goes
The buy side has exactly one real flow: Polygon PoS retains EIP-1559. Every transaction on the Polygon PoS network burns the gas fee paid in POL. At current network activity, the burn pace runs roughly 0.4M POL per day, or about 35M POL per 90 days. The burn rate scales directly with chain activity — during demand spikes in early 2026, the burn briefly outran emissions and Polygon was structurally deflationary; at quieter periods, the burn falls below the emission and net inflation ticks back up.
This sits in Buy #2 — protocol fee burn — for the framework's ledger purposes. Buy #1 (programmatic buyback) is zero. The VentureFounder activist proposal to eliminate the 2% emission entirely and route 20% of quarterly net cash inflows into a POL buyback/burn programme has been under governance discussion since late 2025 but has not been ratified. If it passes, Sell #1 disappears and Buy #1 activates — a major structural shift that would flip the framework reading from mildly inflationary to deflationary in a single vote. Buy #3 (Foundation buy) is zero — Polygon Labs and the Polygon Foundation do not run a token accumulation programme. Buy #4 (new long-term lock) is zero — staking unbond on Polygon PoS runs ~3-4 days, which is operational, not long-term.
Foundation and overhang
The Community Treasury is the watching line. It accrues 1% of supply per year mechanically, and deploys at the Community Treasury Board's discretion through monthly grant rounds. The Board operates independently of Polygon Labs, with Season 01 having distributed 35M POL between June and August 2024. The accumulation pace is mechanical (~100M POL per year); the deployment pace into circulation is the watchable variable. AggLayer Breakout Program airdrops (Miden ~10% of supply to POL stakers; Katana and other graduating chains on similar terms) are demand-side flywheels — they increase the appeal of staking POL but are not direct buyback flows in this framework.
How POL compares to other L1 governance tokens
Among Layer-1 governance tokens with active emission, POL is unusually neutral because of the EIP-1559 burn offset. Ethereum (ETH) sits structurally similar — issuance to validators offset by base-fee burn — but Ethereum's emission rate is much lower (~0.5% per year post-Merge) and its burn pace varies more widely. Among L1s without a burn offset — Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), Avalanche (AVAX) — emissions show up cleanly in the inflation reading and there's no structural offset.
POL's framework reading at +0.16% is one of the lowest among L1s with active emission. The structural reason is that Polygon PoS runs a meaningful share of low-cost EVM activity, so the fee burn scales linearly with chain demand. As long as the chain stays active, the burn keeps the emission close to neutral. If activity falls, the inflation reading rises.
What to watch in the next 90 days
Three things bear watching. First, the VentureFounder buyback/burn proposal — if governance ratifies, the entire ledger shape changes overnight. Second, Polygon PoS activity — the burn pace is volume-sensitive; a sustained activity downturn would raise net inflation. Third, the Community Treasury deployment cadence — large grant rounds can briefly push Sell #3 into the active ledger, and the Treasury Board's monthly meetings are the place that signal lands.
