A server is just a guess
Every quarter, the biggest tech companies on earth make a guess: how long does a server last before it's junk?
Sounds trivial. It's one of the most powerful levers in their financial statements.
The trick: buy a $6,000 server you expect to last 4 years, and you book $1,500 a year of depreciation — a non-cash expense (the cash already left when you bought it). Now assume it lasts 6 years. Same machine. Same cash. But the expense drops to $1,000 a year — so reported profit goes up (how depreciation works).
Do that across millions of servers, and you move billions in profit without selling anything new.
Between 2020 and 2023, all four giants pulled the lever.
What their own filings say
Alphabet (Google) spelled it out. January 2023: servers 4→6 years, some network gear 5→6. The disclosed result, in its own words:
"...the effect was a reduction in depreciation expense of ... $3.9 billion and an increase in net income of ... $3.0 billion, or ... $0.24 per ... diluted share..."

$3 billion in extra net income. A quarter a share. From one assumption.
Microsoft went first — 4→6 years, effective July 2022. CFO Amy Hood told investors it would add ~$3.7 billion to fiscal-2023 operating income (The Register; 10-K).
Amazon — 4→5 years (2022), then →6 (The Register; Calcbench).
Meta — 4→4.5→5, plus a 2023 extension that cut ~$860M of depreciation (Data Center Frontier; TipRanks).
None of it is illegal. All of it is disclosed. That's the point: the biggest moves are the legal, disclosed ones nobody reads.
The tell: 2025 runs it in reverse
If servers genuinely last longer, the trend holds. It didn't.
Effective January 1, 2025, Amazon shortened some servers back from 6 to 5 years — citing the pace of AI (analysis of Amazon's filing).
The lever that added billions now subtracts them, because AI hardware ages faster. A chunk of recent cloud profit rode on an assumption AI is already undercutting (theCUBE Research).
My read
Opinion — Michael. This isn't fraud and it isn't a conspiracy. These are legal, disclosed choices. My point is about incentives, not villains: the scoreboard pays you to guess high. This quarter looks better; the bill — if the guess was wrong — lands later, on someone else's watch. Amazon's reversal is the system quietly admitting the guess drifted. Bad systems, not bad people.
