There's a ritual every backend developer knows all too well. It's 11 PM. Production is down. The database is corrupted, overwritten, or simply gone. You scramble through your notes, SSH into the server, and realize the last backup you actually tested was three weeks ago — if at all.

The Real Cost of "Good Enough" Backup Workflows
Most teams fall into one of three traps:
The Cron Script Trap. Someone wrote a bash one-liner, dropped it in cron, and declared victory. Two problems: nobody checks if it ran. Nobody checks if the output is valid. A corrupt .sql.gz sitting silently on a server is not a backup — it's a false sense of security.

DBack is a desktop GUI application built for developers and DevOps engineers who manage MySQL and MariaDB databases across multiple servers. It handles backup and restore over SSH, Jump Hosts, and Docker — with an encrypted local vault, SQL templates, remote sync, and a clean dark interface that gets out of your way.
It's built with Go and Gio, ships as a single binary, and runs on Linux and Windows. No Java runtime. No Electron. No browser tab masquerading as an app.
What DBack Actually Does
Streaming Backups, Not Dumped Files
DBack streams database dumps directly from the remote server to your local machine using mysqldump or mariadb-dump with on-the-fly zstd or gzip compression. There's no intermediate storage on the server — data flows from the database process to your local file in one pass.
For large databases (5GB+), this matters. It means no disk pressure on the remote server, no dangling temp files, and faster transfers. If streaming fails mid-way, DBack falls back to a remote temp file automatically, then resumes — with checksum validation on both ends.
One Host, Everything in One Place
Each host profile stores the connection details (SSH credentials, jump host config, or Docker container name), the database credentials, the backup destination folder, and the pre/post import SQL queries — all in one place, all encrypted.
When you restore a backup, DBack runs the pre-import queries, imports the dump, then runs the post-import queries. No manual coordination. No forgetting a step. The entire restore flow is codified in the host profile.
Preflight Checks Before Every Operation
Before running a backup, DBack checks the remote server:
- Is this actually a Linux machine?
- Is

- Is the Docker container running (if applicable)?
These checks happen automatically, with a timeline UI that shows exactly which step passed or failed. You know before the operation starts whether it will succeed.
This alone eliminates the most common cause of silent backup failures.
SQL Templates with Placeholders
Every team has boilerplate queries they run before and after an import: disabling foreign key checks, setting sql_mode, dropping and recreating specific tables, seeding test data. DBack lets you define these as reusable templates with placeholders like {databasename}, {host}, and {profile}, then attach them to any host profile with one click.
No more copy-pasting queries between terminal windows. No more "wait, which version of that migration script was I supposed to run?"
Encrypted Vault
All host profiles, templates, backup history, and activity logs live in a single encrypted file (app_data.vault.json) secured with Argon2id + AES-256-GCM. The vault is unlocked with a master key at startup. Nothing is stored in plaintext.
For teams handling production credentials, this is not a nice-to-have. It's a requirement.
Remote Sync to S3
DBack can push and pull the entire encrypted app data bundle to any S3-compatible endpoint — AWS S3, MinIO, a self-hosted object store. This means your host profiles, templates, and backup history can be synchronized across machines or shared with a teammate, all without ever decrypting on the server.
The bundle is encrypted with your vault master key, not a separate export password. Pull it on another machine, enter your master key, and you're up and running.
Connection Testing
Before you trust a host for a live backup, DBack lets you run a step-by-step connection test from the host editor. It checks SSH authentication, database connectivity, and tool availability, and shows each step in a live timeline. You'll know exactly what's working and what isn't before you ever run a backup.
The Gap DBack Fills
There are enterprise tools for database management. They're expensive, heavyweight, and often require infrastructure you don't have in a development or small team context. And there are CLI scripts — powerful, fragile, and completely invisible until something breaks.
