Running a PS5 on a PC monitor requires a few adjustments that are not obvious from either the PS5 settings menu or the monitor OSD. Here is what actually matters.
PS5 Output Settings
Resolution — 1080p or 4K depending on your monitor. 1440p is not natively supported by PS5 — some monitors will accept the signal and downscale, but it is not officially supported.
Refresh Rate — 120Hz if your monitor supports it. In PS5 Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → enable 120Hz output. Not all games support 120Hz but the ones that do benefit significantly.
HDR — Only enable if your monitor has proper HDR support (DisplayHDR 600 or higher). Most gaming monitors are DisplayHDR 400 at best, which is not a meaningful HDR experience. For most PC monitors, leave PS5 HDR off and use SDR.
Deep Color Output — On if HDR is enabled, Off otherwise.
RGB Range — Set to Automatic. If colors look washed out, switch to Full. If they look crushed, switch to Limited. Automatic handles this correctly for most displays.
Monitor Settings for PS5
Input Lag Mode / Game Mode — Enable this in your monitor OSD. Always on for console gaming.
Refresh Rate — Make sure your monitor is set to 120Hz in its OSD or signal settings if you want to receive a 120Hz signal from the PS5.
HDMI Deep Color / Enhanced Format — This needs to be enabled on your monitor's HDMI input to receive 120Hz at 4K from PS5. Look for this in your monitor's HDMI settings, sometimes called "HDMI 2.1 Mode" or "Enhanced" input format.
Overdrive / Response Time — Fast or equivalent. PS5 games with motion are demanding on pixel response.
Variable Refresh Rate — If your monitor supports VRR over HDMI and the PS5 has it enabled (Settings → Screen and Video → VRR), enable it. Reduces tearing in performance modes.
Brightness for Console Gaming
PS5 games are mastered with a specific brightness target. A good starting point is 80–100 nits for a normal room. Console games often look better at slightly higher brightness than competitive PC games because they are authored for TV brightness levels.
